It may still be a couple of years away from release, but more information regarding the PlayStation 6 (PS6) handheld console continues to come out.
In his latest video going over some new specs and details he’s uncovered, Moore’s Law Is Dead (MLID) says that the upcoming PS6 handheld console, codenamed “Canis”, will be dockable for connection to an external display.
“That’s right everybody,” he said. “Multiple documents directly call out that this thing can be docked, will be docked like the Nintendo Switch 2.”

When talking about the specs, MLID said that the system will have 16 compute units of RDNA 5 at 1.20GHz while in handheld mode. When docked, that speed jumps to around 1.65GHz.
Other previously rumored specs for the device include full backward compatibility with PS5 and PS4 titles, 4 x Zen 6c cores, a M.2 SSD slow, haptic vibration, 15W TBP, and more.
The PS6 handheld, along with the standard PS6 console, are reportedly planned to release sometime in late 2027-early 2028.
Sony has yet to announce or confirm any of the specs that have been revealed recently for the PS6 handheld. Until that happens, or Insider Gaming can independently verified its legitimacy, it’s important to take these claims with a grain of salt.

Why? That sounds weird so it’ll be more powerful than 5 or less? I get the Japan market and way things have changed but this is strange. Also unlike Nintendo, Sony doesn’t really do well with handhelds or making games for it. This could lead to trouble from studios who want more powerful hardware the internal studios especially. The pony audience may revolt too they don’t really like handhelds and even ridicule the Switch.
Yeah this definitely puts the ponys in a weird spot. Even sony said there wasn’t a future for handhelds because of phones and tablets. Well phones and tabs dont have mario zelda kirby samus
Damn Sony said there was no future for handhelds and it doing this. I do have a question does this mean they’re going all digital or are they doing a new physical game format that’s not discs? The biggest issue will be the games it hurts their studios who are accustomed with higher end hardware now games will go back to being around 30FPS-60 possibly lower given Steam Deck even has issues. The PlayStation studios barely made anything for Vita they won’t do well with a device like this actually all of their studios outside Japan I think didn’t make any games for Vita. Then add on they’re doing this for the Japan market but they have no Japanese games or IP like that or studios just Asobi who barely sold well. This is bad for Sony. Nintendo has their classic IP and their stuff does better in Japan. This will hurt a lot of games could lead to consoles getting bricked and games crashing/glitches. Spider-Man 3 on a handheld sounds 😬 once again look at Elden Ring on Steam Deck and other handhelds has some issues and on Switch 2 supposedly it’s a mess. Curious the price of this as well.
@Dave Yeah and they don’t have IP like that level to sell a console like this. Even worse games are in development now for high end consoles things like Spider-Man 3 doing a handheld will put the studios in a weird place. It will be less powerful than a PS5 so they’re downgrading. This will lead to issues not just from the ponybase who will be divided but also their employees being confused and creative wise they’ll for sure walkout now. Could explain why so many quit various studios. This is a disaster waiting to happen mix it in with the Tencent lawsuit and potentially Sony buying WB. I just realized Kojima is making a PS6 game he needs and wants the most powerful hardware to run his games. GTA 7 and RDR3 will have trouble on this thing. Microsoft may have a more powerful console? In the high end console space this once again opens a window for Xbox if they actually have a new more powerful console. Sony is really killing itself bad. Other third party companies will have so many issues with this hardware. Thinking back I remember ponies complaining Series S would do this and now Sony is doing it but also to their own studios. They mocked Nintendo and ignore it being the best selling console but now Sony is doing this they even mocked Vita and are now doing this. Also does this eliminate backwards compatibility for physical discs?
I don’t know why a handheld outputting to a TV is such a big deal. It’s ridiculously easy to implement. The PSP had this feature long before the Switch did. And the Super Gameboy let you play handheld games on your TV back in the nineties. Gaming basically keeps going in circles.
