Battlefield Studios shared a community update on the class system in Battlefield 6, and it’s not good news for players who want weapons locked to specific classes.
Classic Battlefield games locked ARs to the Assault class, SMGs to Engineer, LMGs to Support, and sniper rifles to Recon. Other games featured varying levels of restrictions, but Battlefield 2042 controversially removed all restrictions and allowed you to use any weapon for any class. Some Fans assumed it would be a one-time thing, but Battlefield 6 features the same controversial system.
When it was initially announced, fans emphatically pushed back. Despite that, Battlefield Studio is sticking to its guns, no pun intended, and won’t have any restrictions.
Battlefield 6 Devs Double Down on No Class Restrictions

Battlefield Studios explained, “We have seen the suggestions to revert to previous systems and/or closed weapons. We are keeping these in mind in our discussions as we aim to connect new and veteran players to the Battlefield experience, fostering teamwork and creating a universal understanding of our systems for the future.”
But, as it stands, classes will continue to be able to use any weapon. That being said, Class-Defining features do incentivize you to use certain weapons with specific classes.
For example, each class has a Signature Weapon, so using an AR with the Assault class results in faster transitions from sprint to shooting and switching between ARs and other weapons. There are also Signature Traits. Since Recon users are usually on the backline sniping, Aim Spoting automatically spots enemies while aiming down sights.
The upcoming game also features Signature Gadgets. The Adrenaline Injector works with the aggressive Assault class because it grants resistance to flash and stun effects, enhances sprint speed, and amplifies enemy footsteps.
Those features are designed to motivate players to use specific weapons, but all of the gadgets and weapons can be used with any class, so it remains to be seen if this system will accomplish its goal.
Battlefield Labs is a test in progress, so features are all subject to change, but don’t expect the class system to change drastically immediately.
