Hytale’s original developer is ready to launch the game in an alpha version with cut content if they get the IP back from Riot.
For those wondering, Hypixel Studios, the developers behind the Minecraft-inspired fantasy sandbox game Hytale, recently suffered layoffs and cancelled the upcoming title. One of the members of the development team confirmed that Riot Games was not responsible for the cancellations and that the “issues were all internal” to Hytale’s leadership. Now, the original developer wishes to regain ownership of the Hytale IP and get the game up and running.
Hytale Could Launch in Alpha with Cut Content if Riot Sells the IP Back

Spotted by GamesRadar+, Simon Collins-Laflamme has posted a lengthy reply on X (formerly Twitter), discussing his plans to revive Hytale if they regain ownership of the IP. Simon states that Hytale is not gonna be perfect on Day 1 and “that’s ok”. He adds that this cancellation “might be a blessing in disguise”, as it helps “reset expectations and break the curse of perfectionism”, assuming they can get the IP, of course.
Simon adds that just to be able to release Hytale in an alpha or in-development version, they will have to cut a lot of content early on. However, this move will also help them acquire the funding required “to complete the vision”. Simon is unaware of “the state of the game right now”, but he is certain that the team could release it “with just the creative mode to begin with”. They can get the community involved through shared/open source, while the main team works on “adventure/minigames/etc”.
However, reviving Hytale is a lengthy undertaking that would take many years to complete, explains the original developer. It would first require several months of evaluation, pure engineering work with no new additions. After the assessment, the developers can plan a roadmap, share it with the community, and then hire artists and engineers to implement it.
