The Federal Trade Commission just announced a second wave of payouts related to a lawsuit leveled against Epic Games in 2023. The lawsuit claimed that Epic Games had partaken in shady practices by allowing Fortnite players to make purchases without giving express consent or ‘knowing’ what they were doing.
In December, the first round of refunds took place, with Fortnite players getting a piece of a $72 million payout, but now the stakes have escalated.

This is the second round of refunds ordered by the Federal Trade Commission against Epic Games. In 2023, it surfaced that Epic Games was facing a major fine from the FTC for using ‘dark patterns to trick players into making unwanted purchases and letting children rack up unauthorised charges’.
The eligibility criteria for this Fortnite refund included having unauthorized credit card charges, being charged in-game currency for unwanted items, or having your account locked when disputing unauthorized charges.
Epic Games has changed the ways of Fortnite since then, but the outstanding refunds are still being processed. In total, the company was ordered to issue refunds totalling a whopping $245 million.
Following the first wave in 2024, the more substantial second wave is here, and it’ll see almost one million payments made to the Fortnite players who made a claim. The final post for getting in your claim is July 9, 2025. The full details on how to claim a Fortnite refund can be found on the FTC consumer website.
It’s expected that there will be one final wave, as only $198 million has been paid out so far.
