When you play Death Stranding 2, you might be somewhat harrowed by the themes you explore as the game unravels. It’s a fairly morbid title that’s delivered in a rather beautiful way, but it’s nice to know that there are moments of humour wrapped up in an otherwise relatively dark package.
One such moment comes around on your birthday. When you set up Death Stranding 2, you’ll be prompted to enter your birthdate, and if you’re exploring the game when that day comes, you’ll be greeted with a birthday easter egg that’s equal parts lighthearted and heartwarming.
Happy Birthday!
If your birthday just so happens to fall on a date that you’re playing Death Stranding 2, you’ll be pleased to know that Hideo Kojima and his team will help you celebrate.
This is similar to what Kojima did with Death Stranding (2019), throwing a birthday cake into the safe room as a nod to the celebratory day. In 2015’s Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain, a full-blown party occurs when you return to the Mother Base on ‘your’ birthday.
In 2001’s Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, a cake and birthday message will pop up if similar criteria are met.
Now, Death Stranding 2 is here, and clips of the birthday easter egg are popping up online:
It’s a sweet touch and a bit of fun, and it’s also a great way to showcase the incredible motion capture and facial animation mechanics used to create Death Stranding 2. In a game so heavily bogged down in somewhat depressing themes, it’s nice to see the cast having a little fun with the player.
