Mario Kart World Preload Guide & File Size Explained

Over a decade since the last Mario Kart title was released, Mario Kart World is screeching round the corner as the biggest launch title alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 console, with a bigger file size than usual.

Mario Kart World releases June 5, the same day as gamers around the world get their hands on the new Nintendo console, and stands head and shoulders above the rest of the available Switch 2 titles at launch.

Nintendo Switch 2’s performance improvements compared to the original console have opened the door for Mario Kart World to feature up to 24 racers on the course, but how does this affect the file size? We’ve got the details you’re after.

Given Mario Kart World is a launch release for Nintendo Switch 2, there isn’t much detail available around preload as the vast majority of players around the world won’t have the console in hand ahead of the release date.

Nintendo Switch 2 and Mario Kart World both release on June 5, although some have managed to get their hands on the console already. If you fall into that category, you won’t be able to play any releases early.

You may be able to download Mario Kart World ahead of release, though, either by inserting the game cartridge or accessing the preorder on your account, but, for the most part, Mario Kart World will be available to download on release day.

We’ll update this article if we hear any more concrete details, though we don’t expect this to change.

Mario Kart World File Size Explained

Mario Kart World shouldn’t take too long to download with a decent internet connection, as Nintendo states the game file size is 21.9 GB.

This is rather large for a Nintendo Switch title, however, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe being the closest comparison, which clocks in at 11.3 GB.

It’s not surprising to see Mario Kart World have a larger file size, however, with the open-world areas of the game, more racers in each race, and a huge list of playable characters all adding to the file size.

Bear in mind that gamers around the world will all be getting their hands on the Switch 2 and Mario Kart World at the same time, so download speeds may fluctuate, and you may need to download launch content for the Switch 2 system before you can start downloading games.
