Black Panther Game Cancelled By EA, Cliffhanger Studios Shut Down

EA has cancelled the Black Panther game that was in development and shut down its developer Cliffhanger Studios.

According to IGN’s Rebekah Valentine, EA Entertainment president Laura Miele sent a memo to company staff announcing the cancellation of the game and closure of the studio.

“These decisions are hard,” Miele wrote in the memo per IGN. “They affect people we’ve worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We’re doing everything we can to support them — including finding opportunities within EA, where we’ve had success helping people land in new roles.”

Miele also said that the decision was made to “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.”

IGN adds that EA declined to reveal how many people were being let go as a result of the studio closure and game cancellation. Valentine says that the layoffs are less than the 300 cuts from April, but couldn’t confirm how much less. It was also said that staff on “both its mobile and central teams” were being let go. EA is attempting to place affected employees elsewhere in the company, but would say how many it can move.

EA’s Black Panther game was first confirmed back in 2023. That said, details on the game had always been kept under wraps with no official gameplay ever being shown. All that had been really known was that it was going to be a third-person, single-player game. Black Panther was part of a three-game deal between EA and Marvel that included the in-development Iron Man game along with an unannounced third title.

Marvel has yet to comment on the game’s cancellation.

Since the start of 2025, nearly 2,300 known jobs have been lost due to layoffs. With EA holding its third round of layoffs this year, the number is expected to creep past 2,500 in the near future.
