Extraction shooters have been a major talking point as of late, but one looking to take the crown is Embark Studios’ ARC Raiders, which starts its next major playtest at the end of April. The developers, who made first-person multiplayer shooter The Finals, say this will be their biggest test yet.
ARC Raiders is Vying for the Extraction Shooter Throne
The second tech test for ARC Raiders will officially go live on Steam, the Epic Games Store, Xbox, and PlayStation 5 on April 30th. Players can sign up for access on any platform through the Embark website, or for access on Steam directly through the game’s page.
The game is billed as “an upcoming multiplayer, extraction adventure” set on a post-apocalyptic Earth ravaged by machines called ARC. In addition to the more post-apocalyptic setting compared to the dystopian one from The Finals, ARC Raiders is taking on the third-person perspective instead of a first-person one.
Players will take on the role of a Raider, and travel to the surface to combat the AI-controlled ARC machines as well as enemy squads. Players will scavenge weapons, gear, equipment, and parts, using quests and naturally occurring events to guide their path. Gameplay from the first tech test in late 2024 showcased looting and combat versus both players and machines, but it didn’t give us a firm look yet at how extraction works.
ARC Raiders is one of several titles competing to take the top spot of the emerging extraction shooter genre. Just a couple days prior, the anticipated reveal of Bungie’s extraction shooter Marathon finally occurred, offering a closed alpha test at roughly the same time as ARC Raiders’ next tech test.
