1 Year Later, Skull and Bones is Finally Becoming The Pirate Game We All Wanted

It’s fair to say Skull and Bones didn’t meet anyone’s expectations when it first launched. Ubisoft seems to be learning from its mistakes, though, as its Year 2 roadmap includes land combat and many other gameplay upgrades.

Skull and Bones was in development for 11 years, cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make, and had its development restarted several times. The result is not something I’d describe as groundbreaking, but more a poor impersonation of something the company did better with Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag several years before.

It summed up a disappointing year for the company. Whereas XDefiant is shutting down, Skull and Bones has carried on, and rumors of Season 2 content are true.

One of the biggest criticisms of Skull and Bones is how restrictive the game is. Combat is limited to ship battles, you can’t physically board other ships (cutscenes do it for you), and worst of all, there’s no physical fighting with other pirates—until now.

In the Skull and Bones Year 2 Showcase, Ubisoft showed off many new inclusions: World Tiers, new PvP possibilities, more Ships, extra types of pirates, a Kraken fight, and land combat.

The new ability to engage in duels with enemies will turn heads. You can use pistols and swords to fend off foes. It remains to be seen how deep the combat is.

Do you think Skull and Bones can benefit from this new influx of content? Can land combat turn the game’s fortunes around? Let us know in the comments and the Insider Gaming Forum.
