Marathon is Bungie’s latest stab at a new genre, with the team attempting to break into the extraction shooter market. It’s a game set within a distant universe, with players controlling cybernetic soldiers fighting to survive across a variety of maps and environments.
The team revealed today that an alpha is lined up for the game, set to take place in the next couple of weeks. That’s all well and good, but when it finally hits the market, will Marathon be free to play, or will it have a premium price tag?

Marathon Price Guide
Marathon is a sci-fi extraction shooter with more unique elements under the hood than the average player might realise. It’s an attempt from Bungie to disrupt the genre and challenge games like Escape from Tarkov, which have long held the top spot in the market.
It’s been widely speculated that Marathon will be a free-to-play title, however, in an announcement following the games reveal, that’s simply not the case.
Taking to the official X account, the Marathon account said, “Marathon will be a premium title. Marathon will not be a ‘full-priced’ title.”
“We’ll announce details this Summer,” they continued.
It means that you will be expected to part with some cash in September, but as to how much is currently unclear. The going rumors suggest that the game will have a $40 price tag, but so far, no one has stepped forward with a concrete report.
What Platforms is Marathon On?
Marathon will be available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. The recently revealed alpha will be available across all platforms, and the full release will have crossplay and cross-save functionality.
