While the Nintendo Switch 2 is yet to be officially announced, we know from recent leaks that it is in development and will likely release during 2024. But what launch games should come with the Nintendo Switch 2? In this list, we’ll be giving our thoughts on what we think would be great additions to the new console.
5 – Mario
An obvious choice, you might think. But there are some recent rumors that suggest a new Mario title is in development for the Nintendo Switch 2. Reputable Nintendo leaker Zippo has claimed that Nintendo is already developing a “brand new major Mario title” for Nintendo’s next system and will be using Unreal Engine 4. Although we’d go as far as to say that it could just be a well-educated guess, Zippo has been right in the past.
First introduced in 1981, Mario has been a stable figure for Nintendo since his inception. The Super Mario series is one of the best-selling video game franchises, having sold more than 380 million units worldwide as of 2021. So at this point, it’s almost an easy win for Nintendo to have Mario as a Nintendo Switch 2 launch title, and with our last 3D Mario game being Super Mario Odyssey, which launched in 2017, we think seven years of waiting is long enough.
Who knows, maybe a special edition Mario Nintendo Switch 2 will also be something fans can look forward to on launch, too.
4 – Animal Crossing
Animal Crossing: New Horizons became an unprecedented success for Nintendo when it released and has since sold over 43 million copies worldwide. The game is actually the second most purchased game on the Nintendo Switch behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. In fact, New Horizons grossed an estimated $2 billion in its first year as of March 2021, making it the fifth highest-ever first-year revenue for any video game.
What makes us think Animal Cross could come to the Nintendo Switch 2 on launch is simply the timing of development. Past Animal Crossing games have always released between three and five years of one another and with New Horizons releasing in 2020, a 2024 release date for a new game doesn’t seem too unreasonable.

3 – 1-2-Switch Successor
Admittedly, this is a boring mention, but it’s a likely candidate to launch with the Nintendo Switch 2. 1-2-Switch was a game developed for the Nintendo Switch to help players get aquented with the tech and features of the console. By the end of 2022, the game sold over 3.74 million copies despite receiving “mixed” reviews on Metacritic.
1-2-Switch-2 might not have the same ring to it, but a game to introduce players to the console is never a bad idea.
2 – Far Cry 7
This is probably the most bizarre title from our list, but if some rumors are to be believed, Ubisoft could be launching Far Cry 7 on the Nintendo Switch 2.
Following our exclusive report on Far Cry 7 details, Universe Nintendo editor-in-chief ‘Necro’ Felipe Lima revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that Far Cry 7 will be available for the next-generation Switch. Originally, Lima said that the game would be a launch title for the console, but has since redacted his statements and said that the game is being developed for the console instead.
Ubisoft does have a tendency to work closely with Nintendo on some of its flagship titles and if the Nintendo Switch 2 tech rumours are accurate, Far Cry 7 could be a fitting fit for the Switch 2.

1 – Pokemon
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, the last Pokemon games to release on the Nintendo Switch didn’t exactly resonate well with fans. The games launched in arguably one of the worst states ever for a Pokemon game and while those releases have almost certainly affected Game Freaks’ reputation, a strong redemption arc for the Nintendo Switch 2 and its tech would be a warm welcome.
Personally, I’d love Pokemon to go back to a more traditional title, heck, I’d even love another 2D Pokemon to return. Whatever the case though, a Pokemon title for a Nintendo Switch 2 launch title would be a very warm welcome and would help the sales of the console immensely.
