On Monday, a new report surfaced claiming that Embracer Group was looking into selling Gearbox Entertainment, the team behind the Borderlands franchise. Bloomberg has an update on a potential sale that comes from inside Gearbox Entertainment itself.
In an email seen by Jason Schreier at Bloomberg, Gearbox chief communications officer Dan Hewitt addressed the rumors circulating.
“The base case is that Gearbox remains a part of Embracer,” he told staff members. “However, there are many options under consideration, including Gearbox’s transfer, taking Gearbox independent, and others. Ultimately, we’ll move ahead with whichever path is best for both Gearbox and Embracer.”

The email closed with Hewitt admitting that there will be “a lot of speculation in the coming weeks”. However, he wanted to make it clear that “nothing has been decided yet”.
The news of a potential Gearbox sale comes on the heels of Embracer deciding to shut down Saints Row developer Volition after 30 years. Embracer purchased Gearbox for $1.3 billion back in 2021.
