Amazon has purchased the rights to the Tomb Raider series for ‘600 million’, a new report claims.
The apparent deal comes from the website Fellowship of Fans, which states that the current owner, Embracer Group, has leased the rights to the iconic Tomb Raider franchise to Amazon for a sizable sum.
According to the report, the deal was “approximately a 600 million overall package making it Amazon’s second biggest commitment after purchasing the television rights for ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’.”
The report doesn’t specify which currency that figure is counted in, however. Amazon has already announced that it will be publishing the next Tomb Raider game, which is being developed in Unreal Engine 5.
The company has yet to officially confirm interest in TV and cinematic adaptations of the video game series, but recent reports have indicated that a new TV show may be on the way, with Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the writer.
Amazon has invested in several video game adaptations recently, including a full show based around the God of War games.
The last movie to bring Lara Croft’s adventures to the big screen was 2018’s Tomb Raider, which starred Alicia Vikander in the famous explorer’s shoes. The film loosely followed plot points from the video game series’ 2013 reboot. The game saw Lara attempting to survive after a shipwreck on a mysterious island brought her and other survivors up against a dangerous cult.
An animated Tomb Raider series is also planned for streaming platform Netflix, though little information is available on the project thus far.
The most recent mainline video game outing for the franchise was 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which received largely positive reviews from critics. The franchise has appeared since in the limited-release 2022 free-to-play mobile title, Tomb Raider Reloaded.
Lara Croft and Croft Manor have also made the jump to Epic Games’ immensely popular battle royale game Fortnite. Several skins of Ms. Croft were added to the game in 2021, including both classic and modern interpretations of the character.
