Telltale Games has announced that The Wolf Among Us 2 is no longer going to be released in 2023. Instead, the game will launch in 2024.
“We’ve made the difficult decision to delay The Wolf Among Us 2 out of 2023,” the company said in a statement on Twitter.
“We started work on this in 2020 and we’re still determined to tell the ongoing story of Bigby and the rest of the Fabletown gang,” they continued. “However, it is going to require more time. As disappointed as you are hearing this, we feel worse having to say it.”
Telltale says that the studio wants to make sure that the game is what fans want. However, they want to do it right by those working on it day in, and day out.
“We’re committed to delivering the sequel fans deserve and doing what’s right for the game while protecting the health of our team,” they said.
To add context behind the decision, Telltale Games CEO Jamie Ottilie told IGN’s Rebekah Valentine that switching the game from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5 added some extra work to the team. He also said that causing burnout among employees not only hurts those burnt out, but also the game as a whole.
“If we put this game out and it’s not ready, we’re going to get torn to shreds,” he said about the response to The Wolf Among Us 2. “The expectations are pretty high, and we want time to meet those and we want to be proud of it and know that, ‘Hey, this is the best game we could have made.’
He continued: “I’ve done [crunch], and I don’t want to do it again, and it’s not fair to ask it. You can’t plan a business around it. So yeah, part of it is about maintaining a healthy work culture. We don’t want to burn out our good people.”
The Wolf Among Us 2 was revealed back in 2021. When released, it will be available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
