HBO’s The Last of Us Season 1 saw tremendous success, but when is the Season 2 release date? Here’s everything we currently know about The Last of Us Season 2.
The Last of Us Season 2 Plot
Fans of The Last of Us video game series, of which the TV adaption is based will know exactly where Season 2 will take viewers. At the moment, the current timeline of the game and TV series go hand in hand and the second season will take place during The Last of Us Part II.
However, Neil Druckmann, the writer and director of The Last of Us has suggested that he wants to adapt Part II with a third season. In hindsight, this means that Season 2 will not be as direct of an adaptation as Season 1 was with the original game. Without revealing too much, the revelation from Druckmann suggests that Season 2 could conclude with *that death* to set to Season 3 perfectly.
For new characters in The Last of Us Season 2, we know that Abby, who plays a crucial role in the second game will be making her way into the TV series. In addition to Abby, we also know that Dina will be coming to the second season.
In an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie revealed, “I’m really excited for the Ellie-Dina story, I’ve watched a clip. Someone’s made a phenomenal, I don’t know how they do, an amazing edit of the gameplay, Ellie and Dina’s love story. So, I’m excited to play that out.”
Without revealing any more major spoilers, the official description of The Last of Us Part II reads, “When a violent event disrupts that peace, Ellie embarks on a relentless journey to carry out justice and find closure. As she hunts those responsible one by one, she is confronted with the devastating physical and emotional repercussions of her actions.”
When is The Last of Us Season 2 Release Date?
The Last of Us Season 2 will began filming in January 2024 and the second season is expected to premiere in spring 2025. A specific release date has yet to be announced.
How Many Seasons in The Last of Us?
As mentioned above, Neil Druckmann has already confirmed that he would like The Last of Us TV adaption to have at least three seasons.
The first season follows the original game story, while seasons two and three are expected to divide The Last of Us Part II in half. For spoiler-related reasons that we won’t dive into, separating the second game into two seasons makes a lot of sense.
There are also rumors of The Last of Us Part III game being in development, so we might see even more seasons of the TV series in the future.
The Last of Us Season 2 Cast
It’s already been confirmed that Pedro Pascal will return as Joel and Bella Ramsey will return as Ellie in Season 2.
Other returning cast members are yet to be confirmed, but with huge roles to fill like Dina and Abby, we’ll be keeping our eye out on announcements soon.
