It has been revealed by the film and television industry (FTIA) that HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2 will begin filming on January 7, 2024.
The filming of the first season began in July 2021, ending in June 2022, and premiered its first episode on January 15, 2023. While the second season will likely be quicker in its filming and production, it does suggest that we shouldn’t be expecting season 2 until at least the end of 2024 to the beginning of 2025.
HBO’s film adaption of The Last of Us was a huge success, with the first episode premiering at 4.7 million viewers on the first day. The weekly episodes then surpassed previous viewer ratings week over week, with the series averaging 32 million viewers per episode.
The second season is officially described as, “A big-screen adaption of the video game. In the game, a damaged man, Joel, escorts a young woman named Ellie across the United States ravaged by an infection that turns people into zombie-like cannibalistic monsters.”
Following the conclusion of the first season, it’s expected that season 2 will follow closely to the original material of the game and take place during The Last of Us Part II.
Earlier this year, Neil Druckmann suggested that the series will have a Season 3 when adapting The Last of Us Part II. So for now at least, it looks like we’ll be getting at least two more seasons of the TV adaption before it’s over.
