For those not in the know, Stray was a legitimate contender for Game of the Year in a lot of circles in 2022. Released by Annapurna on PlayStation and PC on July 19th (and later released on Xbox), Stray put players in control of an adorable cat, fighting for survival and solving mysteries in a dystopian world.
It was an emotional, thought-provoking experience that was short, sweet, and very memorable. Now, it’s evolving – and thanks to Annapurna’s recent advances into animation, there’s a full-fledged animated movie in the works that’ll be based in the Stray universe.
Straying Onto The Big Screen
In a statement, Robert Baird of Annapurna Animation spoke highly of the project and revealed some details about the movie:
This is a game that’s all about what makes us human, and there are no humans in it. It’s a buddy comedy about a cat and a robot, and there’s such a hilarious dynamic. So, there’s comedy inherent in this, but there’s not one human being in this movie. I think it’s one of the reasons why the game was incredibly popular, that you are seeing the world through the point of view of an adorable cat.
From that, it seems like the adaptation will literally be a like-for-like retelling of the events explored in the 2022 game – but it could of course go beyond that. It’s fitting news for the current climate – it seems like every game ripe for deeper exploration is getting a television series or a movie deal at the moment.
Are you excited about the premise of a Stray movie, or are you yet to play the game?
