You Can Cross Some Star Wars Outlaws Planets in Just Four Minutes

In a recent interview, it was revealed that some of the planets in Star Wars Outlaws might not be as wide and open as we first thought. Speaking candidly on the topic, the creative director working on Outlaws, Julian Gerighty, explained that when a player is riding on Kay Vess’ speeder, they’ll be able to cross the planet in around four or five minutes at the most.

It was referenced that this timeframe refers to Tosharra, Tattooine, and Akiva. Gerighty admitted that it ‘doesn’t sound like a lot’, but said that it’s a fairly large amount once you get underway, and it’s not like a speeder is a slow vehicle… I mean, the clue is in the name.

Step in the Right Direction

In the interview with IGN, Julian Gerighty explained:

We don’t want things to be just big for big sake. We need it to be contained, always fun, always proposing different activities. So the traversal of the whole thing had to feel like a journey, a commitment when you get on your speeder and you want it to go from one end to the next.

It could be a good thing that Star Wars Outlaws isn’t as gargantuan as some players might have hoped. Let’s look at another Ubisoft example – Assassin’s Creed Mirage. In 2017, Ubisoft pivoted the operating model for Assassin’s Creed and introduced impossibly large worlds packed with things to see and do, and players complained that they were simply too large.

It peaked with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which boasted the longest ‘time to complete’ out of any AC game that came before simply because it was so unfathomably enormous.

In 2023, AC Mirage was released and players breathed a sigh of relief – it was a small-form game that was seen as a return to the glory days of Assassin’s Creed, and it was remarkably well received.

With that being said, perhaps it’s not so bad that Star Wars Outlaws’ planets aren’t overwhelmingly huge.
