If you were hoping that the newest version of the Sony DualSense, the DualSense Edge, would have improved battery life, you’re going to want to sit down for this one. According to The Verge, which recently got hands-on time with the new controller, the DualSense Edge comes with a lot of new features except for longer Battery Life.
Sean Hollister, who was the reporter testing the $200 controller, says that he wasn’t able to fully test the controller’s battery life. Nor was he really able to talk to Sony about it. Instead, the company released a prepared statement on the matter.
In response to concerns about the DualSense Edge controller’s battery life, Sony says that it’s only “moderately shorter than the original”.
“The DualSense Edge wireless controller’s operating time is moderately shorter than the original DualSense wireless controller because we’ve included many more features within the same form factor and ergonomic design as the original DualSense controller,” the company said in a statement to the publication. “We wanted to strike a good balance between wireless operating time and delivering robust, high-performance features. Additionally, the longer USB braided cable is also great for competitive players who prefer playing with a wired connection to avoid wireless interference – this option preserves battery life.”
As of publishing, there is no mention of what the expected battery life should be for the DualSense Edge. If it’s going to be less than the original DualSense, though, one should expect no more than four hours or so on a full charge. Luckily, Sony is being very considerate by giving players a nearly 10-foot braided USB-C cable to use with it. Just be ready to be really close to your screen if you need it when playing, or have an outlet nearby.
The DualSense Edge launches on January 26, 2023.
