PS5 Disc Drive Is Selling Out After PS5 Pro Announcement

The PS5 Disc Drive is selling out at online retailers.

After the reveal of the PS5 Pro on Tuesday, it was made clear that in order to get a disc drive for the new console, you’d have to purchase the external drive. Since then, as spotted online by Wario64, the peripheral has been selling out everywhere.

As of writing, the drive is #8 on Amazon’s best sellers for video games. On Best Buy’s website, you can’t even order the drive anymore as it’s currently sold out. It is still available on sites like Target, Walmart, and PS Direct.

Amazon video game best sellers include the PS5 Disc Drive

The external PS5 Disc Drive was made available when the new PS5 Slim consoles were announced and released in 2023. Moving forward, it seems clear that it you want to play physical media on your consoles, you’ll have to by an add-on rather than having a default option.

Currently, it retails for $79.99. With the $700 price tag of the PS5 Pro, you are looking at $800+ after taxes for the mid-gen upgrade from Sony.

While I like the idea of the disc drive, I don't $100CDN+tax like it, for now anyway.

Fully expected that this would happen. Gonna be a serious shortage of disc drives and stands when this console comes out. Debating picking up mine now.

I found it hilariously optimistic that some people were hoping the backlash on pricing and lack of consumer enthusiasm would lead Sony to lower the price of the PS5 Pro; but clearly there is demand, or at the very least scalpers anticipate there will be enough demand to make it worth their time. So don't expect any kind of discount/sale anytime soon.

Unless the disc drives were in incredibly short supply?

I can't imagine they have a lot of stock for the disc drives as they're really only for folks who're wanting to add that option onto their new slim digital PS5 model.

It is a MASSIVE oversight to not include an option with a disc drive in the box, even if it was just the mountable drive that you set up yourself.

I'm finding it hard to believe its regular people buying them up. Personally, I think it's scalpers looking to turn around and sell for $120-$150 come November. Hope I'm wrong

This is definitely a probable scenario.

I feel like the people complaining are a loud majority. Most people will see a new ps5 coming out and just buy it without caring about the price.

I just wonder how much of the disc drive sales is people actually wanting one vs scalpers trying shore them up to overcharge when the PS5 Pro launches
