How to Start Project M & Catch Mewtwo in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

A fresh drop of content in Pokémon Legends: Z-A has finally brought Mewtwo to the game, with the powerful legendary Pokémon only encounterable by completing the Project M side mission.

Mewtwo, along with its two Mega Evolution forms, landed in a post-launch update for Legends: Z-A on December 2, the second time such a drop has occurred, following the previous arrival of Diancie.

If you’re struggling to find exactly where to start the Project M side mission in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Insider Gaming has all the details you need.

Before starting the Project M mission in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, you must claim the gift of two Mewtwo Mega Stones from the in-game gifting system.

Although you can claim these gifts at any point, you won’t be able to access the Project M side mission until you have completed the main story.

This is done by following these steps:

  1. Open the Main Menu (X on your Switch console).
  2. Select ‘Link Play’.
  3. Choose the ‘Mystery Gift’ option.
  4. Select ‘Get via Internet’ or ‘Check Mystery Gifts’.
  5. The system will check that you are connected to the internet.
  6. Select the reward you wait to receive.

Once this has been done, head to Lysandre Cafe in Lumiose City, the same location where you can catch Beldum, an area you first visit during the main story. Thankfully, all systems are now operational and back online, so you won’t need to mess around with the teleporters.

Instead, head straight to the red elevator and select B3F. Once here, walk into the room and wait for dialogue options to start.

How to Catch Mewtwo in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Mewtwo is not a guaranteed catch in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, unless you use a Master Ball, but you cannot fail the mission. Instead, the battle with Mewtwo will restart.

Upon arriving in B3F in Lysandre Labs, approach the blue screen and wait for the cutscene to activate. When given the option, activate the locks to summon Mewtwo.

Mewtwo will then appear, but will not engage in battle yet. You cannot throw Pokéballs at it either, however, so slowly approach Mewtwo to trigger a battle. From there, try your luck throwing Pokéballs until it gets angry and can’t be contained. Once that happens, defeat Mewtwo.

Mewtwo is level 70, but should be a breeze to sweep past if you have completed the game, particularly if you have any Dark-type Pokémon or Dark-type attacks.

Once Mewtwo is knocked out, throw a final Pokémon to attempt to catch it. If this fails, a short piece of dialogue from Mable appears, before the mission is reset, and you can try again.
