Sources have suggested that PlayStation’s full Discord integration will take place during the version 7.00 Update that is scheduled to take place on March 8th, 2023.
The clarification comes from sources following last week’s update, which showed the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 integrations via the Discord mobile app.
The update, which came as a surprise to most, led people to believe that the integration is imminent.
However, sources, including one source, who has accurately reported past updates, including PlayStation 5’s version 6.00 update believe that the Discord integration will still happen for version 7.00.
Version 6.50 is scheduled to launch on January 19th, 2023, but “nothing suggests this is the Discord update”, it was said.
Due to the sensitivity of the source’s employment, other reasons given as to why it’s believed Discord will not arrive until version 7.00 cannot be made public.
PlayStation x Discord integration should be on March 8th, 2023 if there are no changes to Sony’s scheduling.
Last week’s recent update though, suggests that voice chat will only be available on the PlayStation 5, whereas the PlayStation 4 will only display the game that you’re playing.
In May 2021, Jim Ryan, President, and CEO of Sony announced the integration of Discord onto PlayStation and said “Together, our teams are already hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network. Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.”
“To bring these experiences to life for our players, Sony Interactive Entertainment has made a minority investment as part of Discord’s Series H round. From our very first conversation with co-founders Jason Citron and Stan Vishnevskiy, I was inspired by their lifelong love for gaming and our teams’ shared passion to help bring friends and communities together in new ways. Empowering players to create communities and enjoy shared gaming experiences is at the heart of what we do, so we are beyond excited to start this journey with one of the world’s most popular communication services.”
Since then, Sony has been fairly quiet on the public announcements of the PlayStation and Discord integration and we’re certainly well beyond the “early next year” integration that Ryan forecasted.
Nonetheless, we’re finally on the homestretch ahead of the new PlayStation 5 console that should release in 2023, too.
I hope it is integration in March but cell phone interaction similar to xbox will be sooner this year.
March 8th, 2023 is too far away. It isn’t fair that Xbox gets to use it sooner than us. We’ve been wait a whole year for this feature that was supposedly going to launch back in Jan – Feb 2022.
