The PlayStation 5 (PS5) is officially outselling the PlayStation 4 (PS4) from a pacing standpoint in the United States.
“PlayStation 5 hardware unit sales have now surpassed those of PlayStation 4 on a time-aligned basis (29 months in market),” Mat Piscatella of Circana said.
What that means is that while the numbers of the PS5 sales aren’t where the PS4 is now, it’s currently on pace to pass it when looking at the amount of time available. As of April 1, according to VGChartz, the PS4 has sold 117.01 million units while the PS5 has sold 34.47 million.
Piscatella says that the sales of the PS5 drove overall hardware sales for the month of March in the US. According to Circana data, he says, the PS5 was the best-selling console in both units and dollars for both March as well as the entirety of 2023 thus far.
Aside from the console itself, accessories are also selling well.
“Accessories spending grew 1% in March when compared to a year ago, to $239 million,” Piscatella said. “Gamepads generated the highest dollar sales of any accessory segment, with the PlayStation 5 Dual Sense Edge Wireless Controller Black ranking as the month’s best-selling gamepad in dollar sales.”
