As reported by Variety, producer Roy Lee revealed today that Netflix lowered the budget for its BioShock movie adaptation, though it is still under way.
The update came up during a panel at San Diego Comic Con, which is currently running through July 28, 2024. Lee explained that “the new regime has lowered the budgets,” following the Netflix leadership shakeup.
They elaborated that as a result, the BioShock movie will feature “a more personal point of view, as opposed to a grander, big project.”
Lee also broke down Netflix’s general new compensation strategy, with bonuses based on viewership numbers. The producer added that “it motivates the producers to actually do a movie that gets a bigger audience.”
Netflix first announced the BioShock adaptation a couple of years ago, but Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence remains attached. Although Lee described the film adaptation as a “much smaller version” today, that could potentially benefit the story in some ways.
The original BioShock launched in 2007 to critical acclaim, and the series continues to thrive.
Reportedly, 2K Cloud Chamber recently ramped up development on the next BioShock video game. Just two weeks ago, the studio began hiring for 30 open positions involving both cinematic and narrative experience.
At this time, the BioShock movie does not have a release window, though today’s update provides a better idea of the development timeline.
