Marathon Players Accuse Bungie of ‘Killing the Game’ With Season 2 Update

We’ve only just had Marathon Season 2, and it already feels like an uphill battle for Bungie and the shooter. The new season launched with shaky servers, leaving the already dwindling community unhappy, and a subsequent update has exacerbated the issue.

If Marathon was being evaluated in a vacuum right now, it probably wouldn’t be good. But it doesn’t help that the Destiny 3 conversation won’t go away, putting Marathon under the microscope even more. Players have made their feelings known about the 1.1.0.2 update and its patch notes.

Marathon Update 1.1.0.2 Nerfs Frustrate Community in Update

There are a fair few buffs and nerfs in the Marathon 1.1.0.2 update.

One of the most notable decisions has been to nerf Cradle XP and loot drops, which is going to make it significantly harder for players way behind to catch up, making the game more difficult for lower-leveled players.

thiingyy said:

‘I’m sorry, I hate to say this again, but the rich get richer? Why do we keep aimlessly nerfing loot and XP over and over again? Don’t get me wrong, I’m cradle level 60, but like it’s gonna be harder for people that are behind to catch up with these changes, no? just my opinion.’

Whereas TreyfulTF said: ‘ Yeah, ngl [not gonna lie], if you guys keep nerfing cradle XP, I’ll just stop playing the game.’

There’s been a slight uptick in players with Season 2, but even then, there are around 8-10K players on Steam a day, and the number will likely drop.

So many responses to the patch notes claim Bungie is sabotaging its own game.

‘I don’t know what you have done, but you’re ruining Marathon with every update,’ said z862688. Whereas aquativityy is even more accusatory:

‘Genuinely, are you guys trying to kill your game? It’s dying already, but really? More loot nerfs? Do you think this will keep people playing when loot gets WORSE throughout a wipe?’

You’ll do well to find many positive comments about the changes.

If you still love Marathon, and if you’re not as bothered about the new update, check out the Season 2 trailer.
