Counter-Strike 2 is the long-awaited sequel to the highly competitive and renowned shooter from Valve, Counter-Strike: Global Operations. That game has still been receiving regular updates from Valve, but Counter-Strike 2 is shaping up to be a massive technical improvement.
The games have always had a presence on console but purists feel that there’s a clear distinction between the two versions with the console version of Counter-Strike GO being considered inferior to its PC counterpart. With Counter-Strike 2 set to be a major upgrade, players are wondering if whether the tactical shooter could skip consoles this time around.
Will Counter-Strike 2 Be Released on Consoles?
From the looks of things, Counter-Strike 2 will only be available on PC. While the series has previously had a presence on consoles, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has largely been left behind on PS3 and Xbox 360. The game has not transitioned into the current gen of consoles and had no presence in the last generation either. Most of the performance patches from Valve have been applied to the PC version of the game.
It’s also worth noting the scale of improvement between CS: GO and Counter-Strike 2 which is being optimized to run as a second-to-none experience on PC which is set to push some serious boundaries. While the current generation of consoles is impressive, and they’re sure to improve, they still currently lag behind PC. It’s entirely possible that Valve decided to forego the same route they went with CS:GO and are fully committing to their PC player base which has supported the series for over a decade.
That said, all is not lost. Speculation has begun to mount after eagle-eyed viewers spotted analyst and commentator Chad Burchill mouth the word “console” during the Counter-Strike 2 announcement stream. If Valve is indeed producing a console version, don’t expect it to launch alongside the PC version this summer. It’s likely that the game will take center stage on PC while work is done behind the scenes to ensure that a console port does not lag too far behind.
