You can only access three Descendants when you first start playing The First Descendant. But as you progress, you can unlock additional heroes with unique playstyles and abilities. One of the coolest is Valby. She’s a water-based Descendant capable of dealing AOE damage to mobs. Here is how to unlock Valby in The First Descendant!
Unlock Valby Using Research
There are two ways to unlock Valby in The First Descendant, and the most worthwhile is using the Research Institute. You can find the Research Institute in Albion on the left-hand side of the map in the dome. You want to speak with Anais, a Magister who handles the technology and knowledge of Albion.
Speak with her to open a Research Request, then scroll down to “Descendant.” Here, you can find Valby in the second row, and she requires:
- 16 Hours
- 400,000 Gold
- 1 Valby Enhanced Cell
- 1 Valby Stabilizer
- 1 Valby Spiral Catalyst
- 1 Valby Code
However, it’s a grind to unlock all of the required items to unlock Valby. Unlocking new heroes in The First Descendant is meant as a late-game grind to keep you playing through the game’s missions.

Unlock Valby Using Caliber
Alternatively, if you’d rather not spend the time grinding resources and waiting for the Research project to unlock (16 hours!), then you can spend Caliber—the game’s premium currency. This is likely what Nexon intends for most hardcore players to do, as it’s easier, less time-consuming, and lines its pockets.
If you want to take this route, there’s no shame. It will cost you 600 Caliber, which means you must buy the 520 Caliber ($9.99) and the 250 Caliber ($4.99) to afford Valby.
Once you unlock Valby, don’t forget to use the emote wheel to show off your new character! In the meantime, now’s a good time to sign up for the Insider Gaming Newsletter!
