Hogwarts Legacy was the best-selling game of 2023, final data from Circana shows. The game sold 12 million copies over its first two weeks and continued to sell well as released on last-gen consoles throughout the year.
This marks the first time since 2008 — the original Rock Band — that a non-Call of Duty or Rockstar-developed game has finished in the top spot. It was the best-selling game on PlayStation consoles, second-best on Xbox, and fifth-best on Nintendo Switch.
Following Hogwarts Legacy was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 at number two. The rest of the top five for 2023 were Madden NFL 25, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

As far as general spending on games, Circana says that overall spending on video game content was up 1% from 2022.
