Halo Moves To Unreal Engine 5 With Multiple Games In Development

All future Halo games will be developed in Unreal Engine 5, and will be created by a new studio at Xbox, sort of. Xbox announced on Sunday night, during the Halo World Championships, that developer 343 Industries will be changing its name to Halo Studios to signify a “new dawn” for the Halo franchise.

In addition, it was revealed that Halo Studios has multiple games in development.

Why The Change To Unreal Engine 5 For Halo?

“If you really break Halo down, there have been two very distinct chapters. Chapter 1 – Bungie. Chapter 2 – 343 Industries,” studio head Pierre Hintze said. “Now, I think we have an audience which is hungry for more. So we’re not just going to try improve the efficiency of development, but change the recipe of how we make Halo games. So, we start a new chapter today.”

As part of that change, Halo games will no longer use the Slipspace Engine that was created specifically for Halo Infinite. This opens up developers to work on the new games as opposed to simply upkeep the engine itself. The move to Unreal Engine 5 for Halo will allow for better development games for fans thanks to the benefits the engine offers developers.

“Respectfully, some components of Slipspace are almost 25 years old,” said studio art director Chris Matthews via Xbox Wire. “Although 343 were developing it continuously, there are aspects of Unreal that Epic has been developing for some time, which are unavailable to us in Slipspace – and would have taken huge amounts of time and resources to try and replicate.”

“We had a disproportionate focus on trying to create the conditions to be successful in servicing Halo Infinite,” Hintze said. “[But switching to Unreal] allows us to put all the focus on making multiple new experiences at the highest quality possible.”

As far as the new games in development, Halo Studios says they’ll release when the company feels they’re at the right state to be released.

  • Microsoft is so full of it they previously said well Phil said that 343 was working on other games beside Halo clearly that was a lie. Is Coalition changing to Gears Studios? Turn 10 gonna be Forza Studios? The last games they put out were trash! Infinite flopped so they make more Halo only Microsoft gaming is this dumb. Didn’t you guys report they were shutting down 343 and outsourcing future Halo games is that what this is like the Worlds Edge “studio”?

  • Halo is dead Microsoft just let it die! Multiplayer maybe keep that going as free to play but stop making more Halo single player you’re not good at it. Didn’t they struggle with Unreal before? I say outsource Halo to Respawn or DICE in Frostbite or Unreal since Respawn knows how to use it. Microsoft just rehire Cliff for Gears I don’t need to see it go down this path and let him make his dragon game also buy Unreal Tournament from Epic and bring it back.

  • This made me less excited for Halo somehow I went from apathy to super apathy I didn’t know it was possible. Just close 343 down and let Halo die alright 3 is the canon ending there’s nothing else after. The same for Gears Of War after 3 that’s it no more games. Bring back another old IP or make something else. You guts own Quake now you don’t need Halo. Honestly I’d trust id with Halo no 343 weirdo involvement thinking about it.

  • Multiple Halo games? No we don’t need anymore. When I think they can’t get worse they find a way how stupid is Phil? I know Aaron is an idiot but this is insane these guys get to continue like this. Tango and Roundhouse were both on the chopping block one closed the other sold but 343 who keeps making garbage continues going? They spun off Toys For Bob who would have been better for Halo and actually can support games but let these idiots continue to receive a paycheck? Microsoft is a joke! 343/Halo, Coalition/Gears, and Turn 10/Forza make trash honestly I’m concerned for Playground and Fable since they need Eidos and Initiative has like 12 people and needed to outsource their only game to Crystal Dynamics these people cannot manage or operate studios. Fire everyone at the Xbox side of things at least Bethesda has Doom and the Activision people deliver games every year. Aaron Greenberg has to be in charge of these bad decisions this is all he likes Halo, Gears, and Forza ask him every now and then he might throw in Fable he’s an idiot.

  • Instead of multiple Halo games why not bring back franchises people want like Conker, Banjo Kazooie, Viva Piñata, Brute Force, Mech Assault, Crimson Skies, Kung Fu Chaos, Blur, New Vegas, Evil Within, Prototype, True Crime, THPS, Tony Hawk Underground, Jet Force Gemini, Ninja Blade, Killer Instinct, Tao Feng, Kakuto Chojin, Phantom Dust, Magatama, Tenchu, Blinx, I swear the people at Xbox are dumb like really dumb. At least Bobby made money these idiots run a horrible business and mistreat employees with their lies watch more layoffs on the way thank Phil, Sarah, Aaron, and Booty.

  • There is no point in Xbox Game Studios to exist when Microsoft owns Bethesda and Activision Blizzard just close these slop studios down and fire the incompetent executives that ruined Xbox. Satya just buy Take Two next and you’re set fire the hardware team too just make games for all platforms.

  • We can’t make a new Banjo, Conker, Mech, or Killer Instinct can’t even remake Banjo but we can make multiple Halo games. Just shows you how Phil lies don’t forget Phantom Dust remake you mean to tell me you couldn’t have an internal studio remake that game? Even worse with Fable reboot and Perfect Dark reboot over 50% of those games work load is being carried by third party developers that needed to be brought in because the initial studio has no idea what it’s doing or is run so poorly that almost all the staff quit. InXile needed help too with their Xbox 360 looking garbage game and look at the trouble Avowed had somehow Obsidian didn’t have the team to make a big game so they scrapped years of development and started over again on a smaller crappier project? But Grounded and Pentiment released and Ninja Theory took 5 years on Hellblade 2 a literal walking sim but delivered Bleeding Edge? The founder left but he said he wanted to bring back Kung Fu Chaos why wasn’t that brought back? A cheap party game with online would have worked unlike this expensive garbage. Fuzion Frenzy where’s that? Halo isn’t even making money but they drag it on. Then there’s State Of Decay 3 the founder also left and that game has taken forever as well the studio also makes nothing else besides that 1 franchise and Contraband what happened to that game? Shown in 2020 and never shown again! Almost forgot Everwild the game that had cgi trailers but no idea what it was going to be gameplay wise which also got scrapped and started over again despite showing trailers.

  • Halo lived but Killer Instinct 2013 died reminder they let Double Helix die don’t let their BS excuse fool you they don’t get gaming or business apparently at Xbox.
