THE INSIDER SAYS: “The best way to describe Synth Riders for the Nintendo Switch: Guitar Hero x Tony Hawk x TRON. For those of you familiar with the VR rhythm game, this is a completely different take on the series, built for the Nintendo Switch. Between the loads of licensed tracks across a BUNCH of music genres and the variety of modes, this game’s for jamming with friends or going solo.”
Rhythm games have taken some interesting forms over the years. Heck, this month alone, we’ve seen single-button pressers-to-the-beat to full audio/visual novel adventures. Synth Riders is a partial throwback to the classic days, that packs in a lot of features and licensed tracks.
Music can make-or-break a game and Synth Riders hedges its bets, launching with 64 tracks ranging from artists like Queen, Sia, Charli xcx, David Guetta and One Republic, Artemas, Wham!, Dance with the Dead, Sunset Neon, and Starcadian. To name a few.
How does the game play and feel, though? You’re on a digitized skate deck, tearing through a glowy-neon landscape clearly inspired by the original TRON. Move your avatar’s arms around to hit on-screen targets, stomp spots on the streaming playfield, duck and dodge around obstacles and grind neon rails to the music.
The variety of modes we mention up top? You’ve got a few ways to play: Split-screen PVP multiplayer is there, but also a 2-4 player co-op mode where it’s a single shared screen. You can go through a campaign to unlock cosmetics for each of the playable characters and waiting at the end is a boss battle.
If you’re looking for a solid, sleek take on rhythm gaming, a demo will be available on the Nintendo eShop.
