Sony's PC strategy has taken an interesting turn, with the sequels of their major single-player games underperforming compared to their predecessors. For instance, God of War hit a peak of 73,529 concurrent players, while God of War: Ragnarok managed only 35,615. Similarly, Horizon Zero Dawn saw 56,557 players at its peak, but its sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, dropped to 40,462. This trend is evident in the Spider-Man series as well, with Spider-Man Remastered peaking at 66,436 players, while Miles Morales reached just 13,539. Based on this, it's likely that Spider-Man 2 and The Last of Us Part 2 will also see reduced numbers. However, Sony's decision to introduce a new main character in the next Ghost of Tsushima might be a game changer. After all, Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut is Sony's most successful PlayStation-to-PC port to date, peaking at 77,154 concurrent players and becoming the best-selling game in the US in May 2024.
Despite the declining interest in sequels, Sony seems committed to keeping single-player games on their current PC release schedule, while live service PlayStation titles will have day-one PC launches. It'll be interesting to see if this strategy shifts in the future. What do you think?
