Are there big downsides to large playtests?

Obviously it'll cost them money but surely having a representative sample, of say 1000 people, will help massively with addressing things the players don't like and therefore translate to better reviews and more sales. If that offsets the cost of these test, I really don't get why more and more devs don't do this.

How does one get involved with testing? Super interested.

They have a site to sign up for play tests, just google EA Playtest. Doubt we will see BF on there anytime soon but I got to play a couple alpha tests for the last BF which was cool.
