Fortnite Cheater is Required to Pay $175,000 to Epic Games

A Fortnite cheater has been ordered by the court to pay Epic Games $175,000 for cheating in several Fortnite tournaments.

The announcement was made on the official Fortnite Competitive X (formerly Twitter) account, where it was said,

“THIS JUST IN: The Judge ruled in our favor after the cheater ignored our lawsuit. The player is required to pay $175,000, and we’ll donate what we collect to charity. They are also banned from playing Fortnite forever.”

Epic Games initiated the lawsuit in December 2024, after discovering that one player was utilizing various software and hardware cheats to evade detection. According to Epic Games, the user was cheating on multiple accounts.

As announced by Epic Games yesterday, the $175,000, or whatever amount is ultimately collected from the player, will be donated to charity.

Wider Implications

As for what the lawsuit means for the wider community, it’s hoped that Epic Games has set a precedent for how developers and publishers should deal with cheaters in video games.

ModernWarzone, an X account that primarily covers Call of Duty news, said, “COD needs to take notes for real”.

Another account, Joey Tha Demon said, “Call of duty take notes – you dont do anything about the cheating”

As for whether other developers and publishers will take note remains to be seen, but fingers crossed, the lawsuit will not only discourage users from cheating but also persuade publishers to take legal action if cheaters are caught.

What do you think of the Fortnite cheater having to pay $175,000? Do you think it was the right decision? Let me know in the Insider Gaming forum.
