During a recent stream, Seth ‘Scump’ Abner addressed rumours about Matthew ‘FormaL’ Piper potentially returning to Call of Duty esports. The former Call of Duty world champion retired from the title in 2021, moving back into Halo and going on to win a world championship in the HCS following a reboot of the competitive ecosystem.
Now, FormaL’s future is up in the air. Presently, he’s competing at the Halo World Championship tournament in Seattle, but per Scump’s latest comments, he might be shaping up for a return to Call of Duty.
The King is Back
In July, FormaL made a comment that he intends to play Black Ops 6 at a professional level, which gels quite nicely with what Scump just said during a stream:
FormaL has been hinting, he might be coming to play COD, we don’t know what the f*** is going on with FormaL … He’s kind of hinted at it, he’s been talking about it, it’s a possibility, nobody knows for sure. If this is FormaL’s last event for Halo – I don’t know if he wants to play COD or what he wants to do – and he goes in there and wins that s***, talk about scenes.
If FormaL wins the World Championship tournament in Seattle, he’ll further concrete himself as one of the greatest controller-based esports players to ever exist. He’s one of just two competitors in the world to have a world championship title secured across two games – Halo and Call of Duty.
The Halo esports ecosystem isn’t in tip-top shape, so it could be that FormaL is anticipating a relocation to greener pastures. In the last year, the Call of Duty League’s operators made several positive changes that sat nicely with the competitive community, so there are high hopes that the next season will be a banger.
With that being said, it’s unsafe to assume that FormaL could just waltz back into the League and get a spot. He hasn’t competed in more than three years, so he’ll probably be better suited to Challengers – at least until he proves he still has the gunny needed to succeed.
