The Guild Creator Felicia Day On Why She Rejected a Hollywood Reboot

Felicia Day didn’t always have the idea of bringing back The Guild. While she’s kept in touch with her castmates over the years, there wasn’t truly that desire to return to the series that became a hit in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

That changed a couple of years ago as she began thinking about what could be done for the series’ 20th anniversary in 2027. And then it really got its start after an ill-fated phone call.

Speaking with Insider Gaming about the upcoming launch of The Guild: The Movie Kickstarter on July 20, Day said that she received a call from Hollywood about the series. The initial excitement of having someone who wanted to talk about the show quickly turned into frustration and motivation.

Hollywood Wanted To Go Younger

Day said she was happy that someone from Hollywood was showing interest in the show. It wasn’t until the call happened, though, that she found out their real agenda.

“They were like, ‘We’d like you as a writer to reboot the show with younger actors,” Day said.

After getting off the call, Day said the motivation was there to get started writing a script for The Guild.

“I’m like, you know what? I’m going to make a movie. It’s going to be amazing,” she said. “And the fans are going to support it. So, I didn’t even try to sell this movie to Hollywood. I don’t need them.”

With the movie being crowdfunded through Kickstarter, it’s become a more personal endeavor for Day and the cast. Rather than relying on a big check from a Hollywood studio, the fans who’ve supported the show over the years have a part in seeing what Day believes is the biggest thing she’ll ever do in her career come to fruition.

“I’ll do whatever I can to make stuff for [the community],” she said, adding that The Guild: The Movie is the number one most-followed movie in Kickstarter’s history before the funding even begins. “This will definitely be the biggest thing I’ll ever do; it’s a big movie.”
