Everything We Know About Mario vs. Donkey Kong

Mario vs. Donkey Kong has been around since the early days of gaming, making it one of the most iconic titles in gaming history. The popular 2D adventure has players play as Mario as he tries to defeat Donkey Kong in a series of levels and challenges.

With quite a few different versions of the games released over the years, we are finally going to get one on the Nintendo Switch in 2024.

Here is everything we know about the Nintendo Switch release of Mario vs. Donkey Kong.

What is Mario vs Donkey Kong?

Originally released under the name Donkey Kong back in 1981. While it may have been called Donkey Kong, the game actually followed Mario as he worked to save Pauline from the popular Ape character.

The game had a vertical layout, where Mario would start at the bottom and work his way up to the top of each level, trying to defeat Donkey Kong. Simultaneously, Donkey Kong would be throwing barrels and setting other obstacles for Mario to avoid.

The game had various levels for players to play through, making it the perfect arcade-styled game.

Eventually, in 2004, Nintendo released the first Mario vs Donkey Kong, which came out for the Game Boy Advanced. While having a different name, it was essentially the same type of game. Mario had to defeat Donkey Kong in levels similar to the 1981 classic.

Is the Nintendo Switch Version of Mario vs Donkey Kong a Remake?

Essentially, yes; the Nintendo Switch version of Mario vs Donkey Kong is a remake of the Game Boy Advanced version. However, with much better graphics and better hardware, players can expect the levels to be much different and hopefully more difficult.

When Will the Game Release?

The set release date for Mario vs Donkey Kong is on February 16, 2024. Hopefully, we see no delays and the game will be released on time.

What Platforms Will Mario vs Donkey Kong be Playable on?

It goes without saying, that due to this being a Nintendo title, Mario vs Donkey Kong will only be available for the Nintendo Switch. Platforms such as the PS5 and Xbox will not support this game.

There are rumors, however, that the Nintendo Switch 2 will release in 2024. It is unknown at the time, but will more than likely be playable on the current Switch and the future one (if it releases within the next year).

The game will be a 2 GB download. This obviously seems small, but the original SD card that comes with the Switch is small, so it may be best to upgrade to an SD card with more space.

Will Mario vs Donkey Kong be Multiplayer?

Fans who love playing games with their friends will be delighted to know, that unlike the original Game Boy Advanced version, the Nintendo Switch version of Mario vs Donkey Kong will be multiplayer.

A brand new co-op mode was added to the game, making it playable with another person. It’s not Luigi this time though that helps Mario out with his adventures, but instead the infamous Toad who sticks by his side.

With new graphics and a co-op mode, Mario vs Donkey Kong for the Nintendo Switch is looking to be one of the best family games of the year.

How Much Will the Game Cost?

Unfortunately, even Mario has become a victim of the recent inflation in video game titles. Mario vs. Donkey Kong will cost approximately $49.99 USD, making it one of the more expensive Switch titles.

It seems though, that most games are seeing an influx in price, as games like Tears of the Kingdom were released at $69.99 last year, instead of the normal $59.99.
