As first reported by Variety, smash indie hit Dredge will officially get a live-action movie adaptation, with production company Story Kitchen attached.
Story Kitchen is partnering with Dredge’s original developer Black Salt Games for the adaptation.
Today’s report also reveals a logline for the film, describing it as “The Sixth Sense’ on the water.” It adds that the approach will be “a grounded atmospheric cosmic horror blend of HP Lovecraft and Ernest Hemingway.”
Dredge first launched in March 2023, and still has Overwhelmingly Positive reviews on Steam. It was nominated twice at The Game Awards 2023, for both Best Debut Indie Game and Best Independent Game.
Story Kitchen’s creatives have worked on other video game adaptations before, including the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog series. Founder Dmitri M. Johnson also contributed to Netflix’s upcoming animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.
So, although Story Kitchen is a relatively new studio, it does have specific experience with gaming adaptations.
True, some Sonic fans weren’t exactly thrilled with the recent adaptations. And the upcoming Knuckles series, which launches later this month, has a consistent tone. So, it probably won’t win over any skeptics.
But Black Salt Games is directly involved, and it will surely help steer things the right way. The logline revealed today also suggests that the approach will line up with the cinematic, psychological, and sincere attitude of the source material.
Dredge is just one of many games that recently announced a movie adaptation. Just weeks ago, Margot Robbie’s studio revealed it would work on a Sims movie. Further, New Regency announced that it will adapt Watch Dogs, the stealth action hit about hacking and vigilantes.
