It was just days ago that Hideo Kojima announced Death Stranding 2 at The Game Awards, but it seems that the iconic, indomitable legend of gaming isn’t done with the franchise just yet.
It has now been revealed that a Death Stranding film is in development, being produced by Hammerstone Studios, a firm connected with Barbarian EP Alex Lebovici. This information was dropped by Deadline, but full details on the project are being played close to the chests of Kojima Productions and Hammerstone.
This is just the latest in a long line of film and television adaptations of popular videogame franchises, but given how cinematic Death Stranding is, it’s one of the few adaptations that could really succeed.
‘Redefine What a Video Game Adaption Could Be’
Recently, it was revealed that Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television would be pairing up to produce a God of War TV show
. In January, The Last of Us’ television adaptation will debut, and there are whispers regarding the goings-on behind the Gears of War live-action project.
Now, we’re getting a Death Stranding movie – it’s a busy time for cross-multimedia adaptations.
In a statement, the head of Kojima Productions, Hideo Kojima, spoke highly of the revelation regarding his movie:
I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios. This is a pivotal moment for the franchise and I’m really looking forward to collaborating with them in bringing DEATH STRANDING to the big screen.

According to the information published by Deadline, the movie will focus on a story set apart from the content found within the games, introducing all-new ‘elements and characters’ within the existing universe of Death Stranding.
Furthermore, while it has been confirmed that Hammerstone Studios will cover the budgetary side of things and Kojima’s studio will master the creative vision, there are no writers or directors assigned to the project just yet.
Regardless, we’re expecting big things from a Death Stranding film, as the original game, which was released in 2019, was nothing if not deeply cinematic and immersive, creating an entire universe and a plot that was one of the most original pieces of content seen in gaming for years.
