Does Crimson Desert Have Denuvo? Crimson Desert DRM Status, Explained

Denuvo is arguably the industry’s strongest DRM (digital rights management) software, but its positive effects also come with some pretty worrying negatives, and the mention of Denuvo and Crimson Desert in the same sentence might give you the heebie jeebies.

Practically every new AAA release brings about the Denuvo question. With pirating still all the rage in 2026, it’s no surprise that companies want to protect their property. It’s also logical if you’re worried about your Crimson Desert purchase.

Crimson Desert uses Denuvo, and the game’s DRM status has officially been confirmed by Steam.

If you check the Crimson Desert Steam page, you’ll see the dreaded message on the right-hand side of the screen:

“Incorporates 3rd-party DRM: Denuvo Anti-tamper. 5 different PC within a day machine activation limit.”

We should clarify: Denuvo does not affect consoles. Meaning, if you’re here as a confused PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S owner, the matter of Denuvo or DRM doesn’t apply to you, thankfully.

Why Does Crimson Desert Use Denuvo on PC?

Denuvo is being used for Crimson Desert PC purchases to ensure that the game can’t be cracked or pirated, allowing people to play the full game for free.

You wouldn’t steal a car? (At least we hope not). But the memeworthy sentiment applies to games: Developers pour hundreds and thousands of hours into games, and don’t do this for thieves to steal the content and lap it up, free of charge.

Unfortunately, game pirating is still rampant. This is why Pearl Abyss has enforced a strict Denuvo and DRM policy for Crimson Desert. This does mean the RPG might suffer performance issues, a regular occurrence when a DRM is involved.

There have been suggestions that Denuvo can cause frame drops, stuttering, crashing, and a potential litany of other performance-related issues on PC.

It’s usually never good news when Denuvo is in effect for a new PC game, especially for one as big as Crimson Desert. Does this change your mind on buying the game? Leave your feedback via the Insider Gaming Discord.
