At the beginning of the year, following the intense release of Helldivers 2—launching with a slew of server issues—who would have thought it’d become the most thrilling game of the year? But the gaming industry shifts with lightning speed. It seems corporate interests do not align with the players yet again, and now Sony is forcing new requirements on Helldivers 2 players. So, can you play Helldivers 2 without a PSN account nowadays?
Does Helldivers 2 Require a PSN Account?
As of this morning, May 6, PlayStation and Sony backtracked on their decision to require a PlayStation Network account to play Helldivers 2. Following immense backlash from the community, with over one hundred thousand negative reviews and over one hundred countries unable to buy or play the game, the official PlayStation X (formerly Twitter) account announced they would no longer require account linking for new and current players of the game.
They said:
Helldivers fans — we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward. We’re still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable. Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we’ll keep you updated on future plans.

I imagine they’ll reinstate the game in the affected countries, but only time will tell for certain!

Why is Helldivers 2 Being Review Bombed?
Following the announcement of its PSN connection requirements, players began reviewing bombing Helldivers 2 on Steam. If a review-bombing campaign ever felt necessary, it’s here and now. Without the ability to voice their concerns and anger due to these recent PSN changes, how will the Helldivers 2 community get through to the suits at Sony?
It’s important to remember that, more likely than not, this is not the fault of developer Arrowhead. They’re almost in the same boat as the players, with the rug pulled out from under them. They’ve watched their hard work and the community they’ve built disintegrate in a single weekend, and it’s likely soul-shattering.
Please do not attack developers!
