Get ready to head to the backyard with players around the world. Playground Productions has announced that Backyard Baseball will feature online multiplayer for the first time when players head to the diamond on July 9.
The publisher calls the mode “the most requested and most highly anticipated feature from the fan community.”
“We’re incredibly excited to introduce online multiplayer and couch co-op to this new game,” Lindsay Barnett, CEO of Playground Productions, said. “Backyard Baseball has an incredible fan community. With online play and couch co-op, we’re proud to be creating more opportunities for fans to connect and play together.
“Backyard is for kids and kids at heart. We want everyone to play like a kid!”
Announced in January, Backyard Baseball marks the first game in the Backyard Sports franchise since Backyard Sports Baseball 2015. As far as console games go, it’s the first since Backyard Sports: Rookie Rush in 2010.
The game will feature over 30 playable characters, a character creator, classic stadiums with day and night variations, and new game modes such as Backyard Derby. And for those wondering, the game will include a season mode and local co-op, as well.
Backyard Baseball is the first of a planned reboot of the Backyard Sports franchise. Dubbed the “Backyardiverse”, Playground Productions’ goal is to create “a connected world where sports, storytelling, and culture all come together.”
“Backyard Baseball is not simply a throwback; it is the kickoff to a whole new era of Backyard Sports,” they said.
