Atari Becomes Majority Shareholder in Thunderful Group

Atari has become the majority shareholder in Thunderful Group by acquiring 82% of its shares.

Atari is a legacy name in the gaming industry, having developed one of the first video games, created home consoles, and published numerous titles. Thunderful Group, on the other hand, is a Swedish game developer and publisher, known for the SteamWorld, ISLANDERS, Lost in Random, and Vampire’s Fall IPs. Both of these gaming entities are now joining hands.

Atari Has Acquired 82% of Thunderful’s Shares for Approximately €4.5 Million.

Announced today, Atari has signed a subscription Agreement with Thunderful Group for a directed share issue of SEK 50.0 million (approximately €4.5 million). Under the terms of this agreement, Atari will own 82% (333,333,334 new ordinary shares) of Thunderful’s shares. The transaction will be approved by Thunderful’s shareholders at an EGM (Extraordinary General Meeting) on August 28, 2025. It has already received unanimous support from the board of directors.

The Chairman and CEO of Atari, SA, Wade Rosen, has stated that this agreement with Thunderful will help expand “Atari’s development with the expansion of its publishing and development capabilities in the European region.” Rosen also acknowledged Thunderful’s capabilities of developing critically acclaimed games. They are “confident that Thunderful will be returning to a profitable growth path while helping to further develop Atari operations in Europe.”

Thunderful announced two waves of layoffs last year, stating that there were “no other alternatives in order to ensure the Group’s long-term sustainability and resilience.”

In other news, WB Games Montréal’s next game is a AAA live-service title that is based on DC Comics. What are your thoughts on Atari becoming a majority shareholder in the Thunderful Group? Let us know through the official Insider Gaming forums discussion.
