Meta has revealed that Horizon Worlds, a VR-exclusive application built for Meta Quest headsets, will start being removed from the VR ecosystem as of March 31. Horizon Worlds and Events will no longer surface in the Quest Store, and Central, the Events Arena, Kaiju, and Bobber Bay worlds will be stripped from the platform.
On June 15, the entire Horizon Worlds application will disappear from the VR space forever, being transformed instead into a mobile experience contained within the Meta Horizon mobile app.
Why is Horizon Worlds Being Removed?
In a post on the Meta community blog, the team wrote:
Earlier this year, we shared an update on our renewed focus for VR and Horizon. We are separating the two platforms so each can grow with greater focus, and the Horizon Worlds platform will become a mobile-only experience. This separation will extend across our ecosystem, including our mobile app.
To support this vision, we are making the following changes to streamline your Quest experience throughout 2026.
The ‘following changes’ went on to schedule the removal of the entire Horizon Worlds app from the Quest platform. It was also confirmed that the removal of Horizon Worlds will have a knock-on effect on Horizon+, the Quest’s premium subscription service, reducing its value a little.
This news has some fans understandably concerned, as in the last few months, some of the VR studios under the Meta label were shut down, and more than a few projects were cancelled. This even impacted some top-tier VR developers, like Twisted Pixel, the team that made Deadpool VR.
