Gray Zone Warfare 0.4 Review

PC Released: April 30, 2024
9
Excellent

Gray Zone Warfare represents a stunning example of what happens when a dedicated, devoted developer expresses nothing but passion for the core product they have created. It's without a doubt a best-in-class title that has untold amounts of potential in store, and after the 0.4 update, it's an open-world tactical shooter that simply must be experienced to be believed.

It’s the dead of night, and you’re stepping tenatively through the village, surrounded by a dense, lush jungle. In the distance, a radio blares some unrecognizable tune, and the crackle of a campfire permeates the still air, disrupted by the first few drops of rain. You raise your rifle, check the chamber, and prepare to launch your attack.

The cough of the suppressed shot cracks in the humidity, and with a strangled yell, your enemy drops, clutching his throat. Miles away, you hear mortar shells thud into some unseen part of the world. On your belt, your Tac-Map beeps with a new message, and you smile to yourself.

You’re already looking forward to collecting that bounty.

Welcome to Gray Zone Warfare.

Gray Zone Warfare’s 0.4 Update Must Be Experienced

If you’ve been on the fence with Gray Zone Warfare, or have tried it in the past but, for whatever reason, you gave up, then now is the time to get involved (again).

MADFINGER Games has just released the 0.4 update, and it takes everything you knew about Gray Zone Warfare and turns it upside down. This PvE-first tactical sandbox shooter deserves all your attention, and then some.

I’ve been enjoying Gray Zone Warfare since the earliest days of the game’s lifecycle, back before it hit the market as a 0.1 release in April 2024. But I can safely say without any shadow of doubt that the 0.4 update is the best this game has ever felt. It’s so monumental that you can’t possibly rely on just being told how good it is.

It must be experienced.

First, let me stress just how much content has been added or upgraded in the 0.4 update.

We’re talking 100 new tasks, with a huge array of the existing tasks having been overhauled with new objective locations, sub-tasks, and deliverables. We’ve got 25 new locations, and upgrades have been made to some of the game’s most recognizable spots, including the starter villages that every player will be familiar with.

There are more than 500 new items, including gear, attachments, weapons, and loot items. And on that note, the loot pool has been boosted immeasurably. There are so many things to pick up, collect, sell, and trade that you’ll never have an empty backpack.

There’s a new task system, and progression is seamless out in the field. You can get dynamic missions in the depths of the jungle, contracts that pop up with huge rewards, and repeatable missions that allow you to grind further than ever before.

For new players, there’s an onboarding system, paired with a tutorial and new starter missions. This all goes hand-in-hand with a field manual and the new tactical UI that allows players more accessibility and ease of navigation than ever before. Playing Gray Zone Warfare is a dream, whether you’re brand-new or a veteran PMC.

We’re talking new and more valuable bosses, heaps of fresh character models, enhanced lighting and textures, new movement mechanics (including tactical sprint), ballistics overhauls, upgraded lore and additional backstory elements…

Have I made enough of an impression yet?

Do you understand quite how impressive the Gray Zone Warfare 0.4 update is?

But How Does It Feel to Play?

I had the pleasure of sinking many hours into Gray Zone Warfare’s 0.4 update long before it was available to the public, thanks to MADFINGER Games.

In an ocean of tactical shooters, extraction games (which Gray Zone Warfare still touches slightly), and sandbox titles, I found myself glued to Gray Zone, unable to put it down.

The core gameplay loop is nothing short of phenomenal. It all starts with your initial boot in your home base, and from there, the world of Lamang is your oyster. You call in a Little Bird or walk out the front gate, and then it’s up to you to explore, solve quests, uncover mysteries, fight the elements (and the enemies), and pick up whatever loot and resources you find.

This is a massive world, too. It’s unbelievably large, and there’s no game quite like it in terms of world-building and making it a genuine pleasure to explore. There are little, hidden spots everywhere, there’s a risk around every corner, and the visuals, dynamic day-night cycle, weather, and combat satisfaction will blow your hair back.

I maintain that Gray Zone Warfare is good for newbies and cracked players alike. What starts as a relatively simple shooter can quickly become much more complex, and the basic tasks you start with rapidly evolve into multi-stage, threatening requests that see you facing off against the game’s toughest enemies.

Believe me when I say you can be dropped out of nowhere with a single shot, if you’re not careful.

All of these elements go wonderfully towards fleshing out the game’s sandbox, which MADFINGER’s CEO, Marek Rabas, said is paramount going forward. He suggested it ‘felt much more linear’ before 0.4, and from what I’ve seen in this update, the team has certainly succeeded in blowing it wide open.

In one minute, you can be taking on a group of rebels at a checkpoint somewhere, looting yourself silly before pushing up to capture a ‘COP’ (Combat Outpost), setting up a station in the field that you can use to access vendors, missions, and your stash. Then, you can head off to handle a boss fight, before dipping into a little PvP action, and perhaps digging through one of the game’s more sprawling, high-tier environments, searching for the loot that will guarantee an immense payday.

There’s nothing quite like Gray Zone Warfare, that’s for sure. It offers a perfect balance between:

  • Milsim mechanics in the ballistics, weapon customization, and combat
  • Survival mechanics in the need to eat, drink, maintain your health, and your equipment
  • Extraction mechanics, in the ‘die-and-lose-everything’ concept
  • Sandbox mechanics in the ‘go-anywhere-and-do-anything’ vibe
  • Cooperative mechanics in the ‘play-how-you-want-with-who-you-want’ nature of the game

It can all be experienced at your pace, on your terms, in whatever style you want. And for every second of your experience, you’re seeing some of the most sumptuous visuals and environments in gaming today, bolstered by the latest technology, supported by the richest ambient sounds, and enhanced by stable, satisfying gameplay.

Is Gray Zone Warfare Worth It After 0.4?

Gray Zone Warfare is everything I look for in a game. It’s challenging and intense but entirely manageable. It looks fantastic, but it isn’t all style over substance. There’s plenty of customization and heaps of meat on the bones, but there’s not so much that it’s overwhelming. It has a good learning curve, a huge amount of variety, and what’s better, it’s still evolving.

We’re at 0.4, and there’s still plenty left in the roadmap to 1.0. Having spoken with MADFINGER Games on numerous occasions, I can firmly say you’d be hard-pressed to find a more devoted and caring developer out there. Throughout my entire test of 0.4, the team from the CEO on down was there to listen to our feedback and apply it directly to the 0.4 update you’re all getting your hands on now.

Soon enough, we’ll have raids into the game’s mysterious ‘Ground Zero’, a hideout mechanic, crafting, and even more content to soak up at every opportunity. The potential is unparalleled, the game’s sentiments are getting better every day, and it firmly remains a title you can fully lose yourself in for hours, falling in love with every second.

Understandably, as this is an early access title, it is still susceptible to bugs, some performance issues, and some network gripes, but it’s night and day compared to where it was when it launched in 2024. The team is constantly iterating, the bug bears are being worked out, and the pain points are being flattened.

You can invest in Gray Zone Warfare for as little as $39.99, but you’ll become such a fan that you’ll want to upgrade to that coveted Supporter Edition. Oh, and for those who don’t like fighting other players, you’ll be happy to know that this PvE-first game has a mode that’s entirely built around cooperation.

Gray Zone Warfare Review Verdict

Gray Zone Warfare represents a stunning example of what happens when a dedicated, devoted developer expresses nothing but passion for the core product they have created. It’s without a doubt a best-in-class title that has untold amounts of potential in store, and after the 0.4 update, it’s an open-world tactical shooter that simply must be experienced to be believed.

I can’t sing the game’s praises enough, and in my eyes, the only thing keeping it from receiving perfect marks is the early access teething issues yet to be worked out. But we’re getting there! Check back at 0.5, and we’ll see how we’re looking.
