Bungie has confirmed that Marathon will have regular wipes throughout the extraction shooter’s lifecycle, and raised a lot of questions; namely, how often will they happen, and what do you get to keep or lose?
Wipes are fairly standard for extraction shooters, with the likes of Escape from Tarkov and ARC Raiders both offering their own renditions of wipes, but there isn’t really a standard method for fans to expect.
Well, details have finally been shared, and if you’re confused about how wipes will work in Marathon, then you’re in the right place, as Insider Gaming has it all explained for you down below.
How Often Will Wipes Occur In Marathon?
You can expect a wipe to occur every three months in Marathon, as they’ll happen alongside the beginning of a brand new Season.
That makes them Seasonal wipes, and that’s a fairly standard affair for extraction shooters. Bungie has clarified that they intend for everyone to go into new Seasons back on the same playing field, with the same sense of threat of death in a world that’s meant to constantly evolve around you.

And unlike ARC Raiders, you can’t opt in or out of a wipe. Instead, you’re forced to partake, so you’ll need to raise your power floor every Season if you wish to remain at the top. Still, it should create a fun final week of each Season, where Runners go into Zones without a care in the world, and it’s the perfect time to use your best weapons without any sense of gear fear.
What Do You Keep & Lose With Every Seasonal Marathon Wipe?
With every Seasonal wipe in Marathon, you’ll lose practically everything. That includes all collected gear, purchased upgrades, and Faction Ranks.

It will truly be a fresh start every Season, as you’ll need to start from the bottom and work your way back up to an elite Runner capable of completing endgame activities. In fact, it’s probably easier to list what you will keep, as you’ll lose pretty much everything else; with that in mind, here’s what remains with every Seasonal Marathon wipe:
- Cosmetics
- Achievements
- Codex Progression
- Liaison Contract
That means that whilst you’ll have to rank up all six of the Factions every Season, you won’t have to unlock them again, which is a handy start at least. Still, that means that every Season there’s bound to be plenty for you to work through, alongside all the new content that arrives with each new Season.
