Minecraft has suffered a massive leak that has uncovered legacy source code from way back in 2014. This code is tied directly to the game’s older versions, specifically those made for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, and dataminers have busied themselves uncovering every shred of information possible from what’s available.
There’s even information pertaining to the PS Vita port, which was one of the most short-lived versions of the game, given the console’s relatively contracted lifespan.
Minecraft Legacy Leak Uncovers Expired Source Code
Tech-minded social media users have been sharing all kinds of content from the Minecraft source code leak that hit the airwaves just a day or two ago. They’ve been trying to rebuild these old versions of Minecraft, the likes of which have long since disappeared from storefronts worldwide.
The older builds that they’ve managed to dig into contain forgotten or failed elements that Mojang and 4J Studios abandoned, such as floating islands and visual effects for waterfalls.
On Reddit, users discussed the implications of the source code leak, with one user writing:
Does this mean there is a chance we can now use modern blocks, mobs, & items in 360 edition?
Thus, we don’t need to buy Bedrock or Java to use modern items?
One of the more tech-savvy users reported that ‘work is already underway and they’ve even managed to run the code on an RGH-modded Xbox 360.’ This was after a Discord server was circulated, populated by folks looking to make the most of the leak. Later reports suggest the Discord server was banned.
Another user explained, when asked if this will ‘make Minecraft free’:
I highly doubt it, all this will do is finally let others make mods for the ps3/xbox360 versions of the game, or make custom title updates with things say from newer versions of the game. This leak will more than likely not affect the current version of Minecraft.
In one shot uploaded to Reddit, user PhoenixSC revealed a file repository that showed the extent of what had been uncovered. The expansive breakdown included several gigabytes of data.
