How to Get EXP Share in Pokémon Fire Red & Leaf Green

Pokémon Fire Red and Leaf Green provide a classic adventure in the Pokémon franchise for Nintendo Switch players, with major differences to modern games, including the EXP Share.

The modern approach in Pokémon games is much kinder to players on the grind, levelling up their party, sharing EXP across the board. Meanwhile, the classic games could be a slog at times, requiring constant switches and tactical party management.

The EXP Share in Fire Red and Leaf Green makes this slightly easier, and Insider Gaming has all the details on where to get the item.

The EXP Share is not available early in Pokémon Fire Red and Leaf Green. Instead, it’s only claimable once you reach Fuchsia City.

Fuchsia City, home of the Safari Zone, is where you get the fifth badge in your bid to become Pokémon Champion. However, there are several other locations you must visit first, including the Rocket Hideout in Celadon City and Lavender Town.

When you arrive in Fuchsia City, the EXP Share is claimed by speaking to Professor Oak’s Aide in the Route 15 gatehouse, east of the city itself. The NPC you must speak to is located upstairs, and the staircase is found at the bottom-end of the gatehouse.

To receive the reward, you must have caught at least 50 different species of Pokémon. Thankfully, you should be past this mark already, and if you do find yourself short, there are plenty of places you can visit to reach the required number.

What is The EXP Share in Pokémon Fire Red & Leaf Green

The EXP Share is an item you can give Pokémon to hold to share experience earned during battle, removing the need to switch Pokémon into battle to earn experience.

While modern Pokémon games have an EXP All built into your party, sharing experience across every Pokémon you are currently holding, the older Pokémon games do not. Instead, you need to switch in different Pokémon during battles to earn XP, making it more than a grind.

Additionally, Fire Red and Leaf Green do not have an EXP All item, with the EXP Share being the best you can get. This means you can only benefit from shared EXP on whichever Pokémon is holding the item.
