One Year Ago, An Unforgettable Medieval Masterpiece Was Released

It has been an entire year since we got our hands on Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. In that time, a lot has happened, including the delivery of three major expansions, a hefty stack of updates, and Warhorse’s official farewell to the game’s production cycle.

As I said in my KCD2 review in February 2025, this game ‘represents a masterpiece of modern game-making’, and I dubbed it a ‘medieval RPG adventure with no parallel.’ That still holds today, and now that the game’s first anniversary is here, fans are looking back on their journey with the utmost fondness.

Defining the Masterpiece That is Kingdom Come

Warhorse poured years of time, effort, and love into Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. Everything from the game’s announcement to the development of the three expansions that came after launch was dripping in cinematic splendour and immense production value. Not an ounce of this game feels undervalued, and every inch of what was created by the team was instantly adored by fans worldwide.

The last 12 months gave way to three stellar DLC drops, all of which furthered the game’s story, world, and lore. We revisited Trosky and Kuttenberg with Tom McKay’s Henry of Skalitz multiple times, and with each new foray into KCD2, we came away more enthralled.

Warhorse’s success has gone on to inspire other studios. It was just recently that CD Projekt Red’s CEO, Adam Badowski, said that KCD2’s realism influenced a push in the same direction for The Witcher 4, one of the most highly anticipated open-world RPGs on the distant horizon.

It was once said by Warhorse that they want to become known for making the best RPGs in the world, but if KCD2 is a testament to what they can create, they’re already there.

kingdom come world

I had the pleasure of being Tom McKay’s first interview on Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 way back in May 2024, when the game was unveiled. It was a wonderful thing, casually chatting to Henry of Skalitz, and we’ve reconnected a few times since then. He recently had an episode with Insider Gaming’s Access Granted, for instance.

When we met at the BAFTA Games Awards in 2025, he told me how overwhelming the game’s success had been:

It feels amazing – it’s like a sort of fever dream, really.

I think back to the very beginning of the first game, when I flew out the Prague and had what was essentially a final audition and I met the core creative team for the first time. That just feels like a world away, you know?

It is like a fever dream that we’re actually having this conversation about this game. However, in terms of what they’ve achieved and what they’ve made, Warhorse Studios, that doesn’t feel like a fever dream, because they’re so talented and so passionate, so on that level, it feels totally fitting.

It didn’t end there, though, as I also hosted Luke Dale, who plays Hans Capon, in another episode of Access Granted. Dale has since come away from Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and assumed the mantle of superstar streamer and content creator, and has built an adoring community.

Unfortunately, we don’t know what comes next for Kingdom Come. It’s widely assumed that there will be a third game, but the second game’s ending wrapped in a way that feels final. There’s an entire universe out there, brimming with history, and nothing is stopping Warhorse from plucking some other event or era and running with that as a new game entirely.
