In 2010, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 was released to an extremely positive reception, expanding on the first game in the sub-series that launched just two years earlier. It’s still considered a fond favorite today, and fans of the franchise have long been crying out for a return to the series, but it’s almost guaranteed that Bad Company 3 will never be a thing.
Recently, Bad Company 2’s lead designer and writer, David Goldfarb, dropped a revelation on social media. He explained why Bad Company 2 ends with a cliffhanger that sets up Bad Company 3, a game that never saw the light of day.
Bad Company 3 Had a Concept, But Nothing More
David Goldfarb often shares development tidbits from his many years in the industry on social media. Most recently, he dove into the topic of Battlefield: Bad Company 3, the game that never made it. If it were to be released today, it would likely have veteran Battlefield fans flocking back to the franchise in droves, but it’s probably not going to happen.
But once upon a time, a concept existed.
One user posted a clip on X showcasing the ending of Bad Company 2, which sets up a storyline with Russian forces invading the United States. It fades to black and teases a follow-up title, but it never came.
David Goldfarb picked up on this post and explained:
haha remember pretty well. Not sure why I did it except it made sense at the time and I really wanted to make a sequel with Alaska occupied by Russia
In an alternate reality, we could likely have been playing Battlefield: Bad Company 3 at some point, liberating an oppressed Alaska from the Russian military that plagued us through the other games in the series.
Instead, 2011 gave way to Battlefield 3, and in 2013, we received Battlefield 4. That two-game sprint is considered by some to be the peak of the franchise, and Battlefield 6 (2025) tried to emulate it in many ways.
Electronic Arts long since shut down the servers for the Bad Company titles, and in 2024, older console servers for Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4, and Battlefield Hardline were shut down.
