Escape from Tarkov’s PvE Mode Was Added a ‘Year and a Half Earlier Than Planned’

Escape from Tarkov’s PvE (player-vs-environment) mode was fairly divisive when it was released midway through 2024. It went hand-in-hand with a new version of the game, dubbed the Unheard Edition, which was exorbitantly expensive and caused players worldwide to revolt – for a few reasons.

Things have settled down now, and Tarkov’s PvE platform is a welcome addition to the ecosystem that many thousands of users enjoy. However, in a recent post on social media, the head of the studio at Battlestate Games confirmed that we’re not supposed to have PvE at all just yet.

PvE Isn’t Supposed to Exist

In a post on social media, Nikita Buyanov, the COO and head of the studio at Battlestate, wrote about PvE, expressing that the timeline for releasing the product was somewhat skewed:

Fun fact – PvE mode was planned to add after the release, but we were working 24/7 to bring it faster and finally added it approx. year and a half earlier than planned.

All of the future changes for PvE were planned also after the release – and still planned. At the start, Tarkov were never intended as PvE game. But we changed that to make more ppl happy.

Nikita once stressed that as a ‘wipe’ in Tarkov persists, eventually, it will lead to around 50% of all players moving into the PvE world. It’s less stressful, it eradicates PvE anxiety, it allows users to escape from anxiety, and it’s a much more casual experience overall.

Leading up to the 1.0 release of Escape from Tarkov, Battlestate Games has been leaning heavily into developing the PvPvE platform, but as Buyanov made clear, PvE isn’t being forgotten:

We still focus more about PvPvE experience, but PvE will be enhanced too in the future.

One thing is for certain is that players with PvE profiles will need to complete a mandatory ‘wipe’ (read: account reset) if they want to fully soak up everything the 1.0 release has to offer. That includes a branching story that allows players to finally escape from Tarkov. For PvE players to get there, they’ll need to start from scratch along with everyone else.
